This part one of the novel tells the story of two siblings who are very poor. One day, Mongu is accused of stealing firewood belonging to a landlord named Reiniar. Mongu is beaten and interrogated, while Reiniar enjoys taunting him and insulting his family. Despite being tied up, Mongu manages to headbutt Reiniar, but is then beaten and restrained by guards. Mongu realizes that he has fallen into Reiniar's trap and fears that his brother, Fangran, will also be dragged into the situation. As the elder brother, Fangran faces his fate to save Mongu.
