The Apology
Author: Xenophon
Read now
Description:
"The Apology" by Xenophon is a significant historical and philosophical work that provides an account of Socrates' defense during his trial in 399 BC. This work is one of two primary accounts of Socrates' trial, the other being Plato's more famous "Apology." Xenophon's version offers a different perspective on the trial and Socrates' arguments, complementing and sometimes contrasting with Plato's depiction. Description of "The Apology" by Xenophon: In "The Apology," Xenophon recounts the speech that Socrates gave in his own defense when he was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. Unlike Plato, who focuses more on the philosophical aspects of Socrates' defense, Xenophon emphasizes Socrates' character, practical wisdom, and approach to life. Xenophon's "Apology" begins with an introduction explaining why Socrates accepted the verdict and sentence of the court without fear or regret. He suggests that Socrates saw his death as a means to avoid the infirmities of old age and as a way to escape the limitations of human life. Xenophon portrays Socrates as calm and rational, accepting his fate with dignity. Throughout the text, Xenophon highlights Socrates' commitment to his principles and his belief in the divine guidance he received through his inner voice, or daimonion. Socrates' defense, as presented by Xenophon, is less about arguing against the charges and more about affirming his life's mission and his dedication to seeking and speaking the truth.
